Exploring Kiawah Island’s Exceptional Tennis Facilities

Where to Play

There are two options for tennis on Kiawah Island. The Roy Barth Tennis Center and the West Beach Tennis Club are both operated by Kiawah Island Golf Resort and are open to the public. You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to play tennis and both clay and hard courts are available for reservation starting at a rate of $36 per hour. If you forgot to bring your rackets with you on vacation, all the gear you’ll need is also available for rent at the tennis center. After your match, find a fun way to cool off or refuel with a drink at the Porch Bar, there are plenty of things left to around on Kiawah Island!

If you do choose to enjoy your time at the Roy Barth Tennis Center, you’ll find a space to put your skills to work that’s equipped for tennis players of all skill levels. Everyone from amateur players to professionals can make the most of their time here thanks to easy access to nine clay courts, three hard courts, and an automated practice court as well. While taking time to enjoy some friendly competition can be fun, and opportunities to work on your own can be inviting, there’s no reason to overlook a personalized approach to training when you’re at the Roy Barth Tennis Center. If you’re looking to hone your skills alongside an expert who can tailor a lesson according to your goals, you can easily book private instruction on-site at the Roy Barth Tennis Center year-round.

Tennis Camps and Clinics

If you’re traveling to Kiawah Island with kids in tow who have a passion for tennis as well, you’ll want to be sure to check the tennis center event calendar as they regularly host age-specific clinics to inspire younger athletes. When you’re looking to spend some time at the spa, drop the kids off at one of these excellent tennis camps to keep their passion for the sport alive! However, if you’re looking to sharpen your own skills on the courts, Kiawah’s tennis clubs also run adult clinics led by one of the club professionals. These sessions are a great way to take your game to the next level! Whether you’re hoping to secure a spot in a clinic or you’re looking forward to a private lesson, you’ll want to make sure to make those reservations as early as possible by calling 843-768-2838.

Play for Free

The only courts that are open to the public without reservation are at John’s Island Park, an easy 15-minute drive from Kiawah. These courts are rarely crowded, well maintained, and even have lights for night tennis! If you had the foresight to bring your rackets with you, this is the perfect option.

Gear Up for Tennis Fun Ahead

While rental options are typically readily available for athletes at the local tennis centers listed above across Kiawah Island, there’s always something refreshing about playing with your own sporting equipment in hand and adding to a quality collection along the way. When you need to refresh your tennis apparel options before hitting the court in style, be sure to set aside some time to check out the vast selection and inventory on display at SeaCoast Sports and Outfitters while you’re in town. Located at 585 Freshfield Drive, this one-stop hub for quality sporting apparel is a place where you’ll likely find it’s easy to linger longer than you originally planned! They’re open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm as well as Fridays from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, and Sundays from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm.

If you’re in the market to upgrade your rackets before you enjoy time on the tennis courts in Kiawah Island, you’ll want to consider making the short journey to nearby Charleston for a wide variety of options. Just 27 miles from Kiawah Island following State Road S-10-20, it’s here that you’ll have easy access to Dick’s Sporting Goods at 2070 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. This well-known stop is open from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm Monday through Saturday with adjusted hours on Sundays from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm. Here, you won’t have trouble taking your time to browse a versatile lineup of racket options and the on-site staff are more than happy to make recommendations if you’re new to the sport and excited to start off on the right foot.
